Handyperson Scheme
We provide volunteers to carry out minor home repair jobs. You only pay for the materials, which you have to provide, and volunteers provide the labour. In exceptional circumstances only, a volunteer can take a client to purchase items or purchase them on their behalf. The criteria for this is that the work should be unskilled and take about 2 hours or less to complete.
The kind of work that we can help with is:
- Erecting shelving
- Replacing light bulbs
- Fitting draught excluders
- Changing tap washers
- Taking down/putting up curtains and curtain rails
- Putting up/taking down pictures
- Replacing electric fuses
- Moving small pieces of furniture
- Fitting doorbells
- Renewing bath sealants
- Re-hanging modern internal doors
- Planing internal doors
The kind of work we cannot carry out is:
- Electrical work (apart from above)
- Gas work
- Plastering and decorating
- Fitting or repairing central heating
- Mending cookers/boilers/tvs/washing machines, or anything still under guarantee
Outside the house:
- Roofing or guttering work
- Working on conservatories
- Working on ladders (apart from step ladders)
- Any work which is likely to take more than half a day to complete
- Any job requiring the use of large tools such as cement mixers etc.
- Any work not covered by the Organisation’s insurance polices relating to staff and clients.
- If in doubt, ring us first.
These lists are for guidance only and show the jobs we usually tackle and those we are not normally able to undertake. However, if you are unsure if we can help or not give us a call. If we can help we will and if we can’t we may be able to put you in touch with other organisations that can. See link to Care & Repair and Trading Standards.
However if you know the job is too large for one of our volunteer handypeople, please see related link to Trading Standards’ Registered Builders, Registered Gardeners and Handypersons lists.
